Changes in Suprahyoid Muscle Activation Based on the Resistance of Therapeutic Elastic Bands Applied During Lower Jaw-opening Exercise in the Elderly Individuals
Oh Jong-Chi

Abstract
This study investigated changes in the suprahyoid muscle activity using the application of elastic bands. A total of four elastic forces were applied around the head and the lower jaw to employ systematic resistance as an exercise technique to strengthen muscle. Twenty-nine healthy elderly individuals participated in this study (mean age 76 y, age range: 66-83). Subsequently, changes in the suprahyoid muscle activity were confirmed using a wireless surface electromyography system during maximal jaw opening without elastic bands and while wearing four different loop-type elastic bands corresponding to four resistance values. Repeated measures of analysis of variance tests revealed a significant change in the suprahyoid muscle activity when wearing the red, green, and blue band compared with the case where the jaw was opened without wearing bands (p<0.05). Consequently, as a result of comparing only the cases where the subjects were wearing bands, the blue band showed significantly higher suprahyoid muscle activation than the yellow band (p< 0.05). Hence, these results show the feasibility of providing systematic resistance when performing jaw opening exercises. Nevertheless, further research is required to determine changes in the swallowing physiology which may occur after long-term jaw opening exercises using elastic bands in the elderly population.
